Over 50% energy Improvement of Mictronics’ new FCUs over traditional FCUs:
1.) Easy Maintenance: reduce labour hours; reduce maintenance time for changing motors from 2 to 3 hours to less than 1/2 hour (See Remark for detailed explanation); estimated annual saving > HK$500 labour charge on cleaning per annum.
2.) Energy savings: 50% (High Speed), 60% (Mid Speed) and 70% (Low Speed).
3.) Silent operation: the use of a bigger blower ( in this newly designed FCU reduces speed (high speed 800 rpm, low speed 500 rpm) to achieve the same CFM; it is generally known that a lower speed operation could reduce noise.

A.) Increase functional value: The easy mounted fan desk design enables easy change of the old/dead motor or easy removal of the whole fan desk for complete cleaning, shortens the job from 2 to 3 hours to less than 1/2 hours, and reduces the maintenance burden.
B.) Increase monetary value: The Mictronics’ mFCS BLDC (brushless direct current) motor reduces power consumption, e.g. near 50% at high speed operation, and over 70% at low speed operation. Since the FCUs installed in hotels are operating 24 hours a day, a 1200 CFM Mictronics’ FCU may save over 1,000 kWh of electricity every year. The high saving rate could shorten the Return Of Investment (ROI) to within two years.

Increase psychological value: The blowers of Mictronics’ FCUs are bigger than most of the traditional FCUs, by which they operate at a lower speed but provide the same amount of air flow, e.g. high speed at around 800 rpm vs. 1100 rpm of a traditional FCU. Therefore, the Mictronics’ FCUs could operate silently and provides a comfortable operating environment for the hotel tenants.
D.) Increase social value: Energy saving of 1,000 kWh is equivalent to 0.703 metric ton of green gas emission. If the hotel has 1000 sets of 1200 CFM FCUs, it implies Mictronics’ FCU could reduce the emission of 703 metric tons of green house gas per year. Dirt and dust easily accumulate on the blower wheel and the metal housing of the FCU. This can result in an unbalanced blower wheel rotation that can damage a blower wheel or motor due to excessive vibration. At the same time the wheel and housing have to be cleaned periodically in order to remove all the dirt and dust. The new design can reduce dust accumulation, resulting in less maintenance.
B.) Coil maintenance:
Coils on most fan coil units can be cleaned by removing the motor/blowers assembly and cleaning it either by a strong air jet or by spraying chemical detergents onto it. Both methods require removal of the fan desk where the motor/blowers are mounted onto it. The new design ensures the job could be easily carried out and the working hours are reduced to around 1/2 hour only.
C.) Replacement of motor’s bearing:
The bearing of the FCU motor has to be replaced after 3 to 4 years of continuous operation due to normal tear and wear. Taking out a motor from the concealed typed FCU is not an easy job. It normally takes 2 to 3 hours to complete the job. Mictronics’ new design enables the fan desk be easily taken out from the FCU and the benefit is from the reduction in working hours.
Remark: The traditional FCU fan desk is fixed to the FCU’s metallic body by several screws on top of the metallic case and two to three screws on both left and right sides of the FCU metallic case. Since the fan desk has to be removed periodically for cleaning the coil and the blower, old traditionally designed FCU needs two well trained technicians to dismantle the fan desk of a 600 CFM FCU. The job is tedious and time consuming.
Since the concealed typed FCU is normally fixed onto the ceiling, it is not an easy job for any technician to remove the fan desk for cleaning. The technician has to stand on a ladder or a lifting table under the returned air inlet which is usually quite small. And the technician has to illuminate the FCU by a portable lamp.
Once the motor is broken, the replacement job may take 2 to 3 hours to complete.
The newly designed fan desk needs only one technician or one non-technician to take out the fan desk of a 600CFM FCU or mount the fan desk back within a few minutes by using screw drivers or pliers or even by hand. Therefore, this newly designed FCU could reduce a lot of labour cost and reduce the maintenance time. It is estimated that this newly designed FCU could help to reduce the labour cost of >HK$500 per cleaning job for each 600 CFM FCU and reduce the labour cost of >HK$800 for each 1200 CFM FCU.
